Bodie Island Lighthouse

Bodie Island Lighthouse

Bodie Island Lighthouse is located on the Roanoke Sound side of the peninsula. You pronounce the Bodie as ‘body’, not ‘bowdie’ 😊 This is the third version completed in 1872, previous lighthouses were destroyed by confederate troops and a bad foundation. It has 219 steps to the top.

The park service runs the tours of the lighthouse and grounds. A bit more restrictive than other lighthouses that I have been too. There is warden controlling entry and one at the top. It is probably because it is still an active lighthouse. You cannot go up to the light itself, can look up and take pictures. If you look at the pictures of the lens, towards the top you can see a reflection of the land and water.
