Wright Brothers National Memorial

Wright Brothers National Memorial

This was one of those sites that I did not expect much but was pleasantly surprised. We have heard the story of the Wright Brothers. When I was a kid, we heard the short story, maybe a paragraph in our history books because everything at that time was space flight, the Apollo project, now I feel old. 😊 I just never really paid any attention to the whole history of what the Wright Brothers achieved. The park itself was nice and allot of walking, I didn’t understand about the Kill Devil hill, well that was a sand dune back in the day and they used that for testing their kites and gliders.

They really had a nice display of the events leading up to the first flight. It all started for them in 1899 experimenting with kites. Learning about lift and how to control it. They actually were ready to give up, many of there experiments failed, until they thought outside the box, they were using established formulas, when they threw those away and developed their own, they found success. They were from Ohio and I never knew why they picked Kitty Hawk North Carolina. Well they wanted a place remote, hidden, soft sand and winds. They found it here and the people at the time that lived here helped them out. Also because of weight they designed and built their own motor, out of aluminum, now that in itself was ahead of the times.
