Wild Horses of Corolla

Wild Horses of Corolla

When I originally planned my trip to the Outer Banks, I did not know anything about these wils horses. I was watching some nature show a few months ago and they had a segment on these wild horses, it became a must see for me. I took a tour through one of many tour groups, it lasted 2 hours. You can go yourself, but you must have 4 wheel drive as you are driving on the beach. Plus my thinking is these tour operators know where to go, the area is protected. This is not a petting zoo, these are wild animals, do not approach and do not feed.

The Corolla Wild Horses is the official state horse of North Carolina. They are descendants of Spanish mustangs brought to the Americas by explorers 400 years ago and left to roam free on the Outer Banks. These horses are considered a unique and rare breed, with the Corolla herd being the only remaining wild herd of its kind in the world.
