Stopped in Norfolk to visit the Nauticus Museum. The museum is located in downtown Norfolk, when I arrived is was nuts. People all over the place with luggage, Police managing intersections, road closures. Well it turned out that a cruise ship was boarding and they also had a wine tasting festival going on. Thanks to an officer, I found a place to park.
I was a bit disappointed in the museum since yesterday I toured the Mariners Museum. One the museum itself was small, there was a floor dedicated with activities for children to learn about sailing, but to me that is not the definition of a museum. The Mariners Museum cost a dollar, yes a buck, while the Nauticus cost $17. The draw of course was touring the USS Wisconsin. There were a couple of items in the museum that caught my attention, one was a scale model of the Monitor and Merrimack together. Allot of displays were of the Navy and Vietnam. Another interesting display was a mortar round that was in a soldier that had to be removed and he survived.
The main event was the USS Wisconsin battleship. I toured the USS Alabama a few years ago, I think they were of the same class, but not sure. The space inside the large guns turrets seamed bigger from I remember of the Alabama.
